Kiko Goats

can our Kiko goats fix your problem?...

One of the biggest problems on our ranch here in the PNW is the invasive Himalayan Blackberry. It overtakes pasture fencelines and becomes established anywhere the sun shines, so we got goats to fight the problem for us.

Then as we discovered, there are goats, and there are Kiko goats. We knew when we started raising goats that we wanted the hardiness and efficiency of the Kiko goat breed, but started with a motley assortment of brush goats we could afford. After three years of trial and error, we purchased purebred, registered Kiko goat doelings from Richard Johnson’s Lookout Point Ranch (Lowell, OR) herd that he’d curated and built in the hands off management style of New Zealand Kiko goat breed founder, Garrick Batten (Caprinex).

We ran those Kiko doelings separately from our original brush goat herd and were blown away by the results we saw as far as:

  • Hardiness and ability to thrive in all elements.
  • The efficiency of Kiko growth through foraging alone.
  • Effectiveness in mitigating the spread of all unwanted vegetation.
  • Ability to thrive without deworming or hoof trimming.

So we cleaned house- sold off our original herd of motley brush goats, just keeping the purebred, registered Kiko doelings from Lookout Point Ranch.  Our Kiko doelings were finally bred in 2024 to a purebred, registered Kiko buck, growing the Quarter Circle 2C Ranch foundation herd of purebred, registered Kiko brush goats to 40+ strong. However, genetics alone can only carry a successful goat herd so far. We have continued the hands off management style of Johnson and Batten, selecting replacement Kiko does for hardiness, maternal instinct, ability to thrive on natural forages alone and success with low to no additional inputs.

Without a doubt, we are pleased with how our Kiko brush goat herd helps us to better steward the land we manage and improve our ranch’s triple bottom line!
